About James Holcomb

Hello, my name is Dr. James Holcomb, and I am a neonatologist at UF Health.

I was inspired to explore the field of medicine by my father, a solo general practitioner who practiced in rural communities. I began my career in medicine by earning a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia, followed by a medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

My goal in neonatology is to provide the best possible care for newborns, whether they are healthy or critically ill. I focus on family-centered care, striving to keep parents informed and involved in their child’s treatment. As a board-certified neonatologist since 1986, I have witnessed significant advancements and ongoing challenges in evidence-based care.

My experience in general neonatology and normal newborn care in Level II centers, along with my work as a medical director upgrading Level II NICU capabilities, allows me to offer practical management approaches. I aim to guide and reassure parents during what can be a challenging time in the NICU.

After completing an internal medicine internship, I sought broader experiences and joined the Public Health Service. I also spent two years as a general practitioner with the Billings Area Indian Health Service, working at the Arapaho and Fort Washakie clinics on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Eventually, my interest shifted to pediatrics, particularly adolescent medicine, prompting me to complete a pediatric residency, including a year as chief resident at Dayton Children’s Hospital with Wright State University.

I found my calling in neonatology during my fellowship at Emory University. After two years on the clinical track at Emory, I returned to Ohio to practice in private settings, covering two community hospital delivery services and Columbus Children’s Hospital.

I later returned to Emory to help develop NICUs in the Emory Regional Perinatal Region and served as a medical director, transitioning a Level II NICU into a Level III facility. Eventually, I joined the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where I worked at a Level IV Regional Perinatal Center. There, I supported the neonatology division through quality management, full-time clinical care, and teaching responsibilities with residents, fellows, and advanced care providers.

Outside of my career, I am dedicated to the growth and development of my young son and prioritizing my family. I enjoy relaxing with music and have eclectic tastes. I enjoy embarking on international adventures with my family as well as hiking, trekking, and Alpine skiing. Recently, I took my first long-distance motorcycle camping trip and hope to enjoy more in the future.
